CrowdStrike to acquire Onum to boost AI-powered cybersecurity

Cybersecurity company CrowdStrike announced Aug. 27 that it plans to buy Onum, a startup known for managing real-time data pipelines.

The deal will make CrowdStrike’s Falcon® Next-Gen SIEM platform faster and easier to use, giving customers more control over their data while improving AI-driven security, the company said.

“Our Next-Gen SIEM is the engine that powers the modern SOC [security operations system], and data is the fuel that makes the engine run,” said George Kurtz, CEO and founder of CrowdStrike. “Onum is both a pipeline and a filter, which will stream high-quality, filtered data directly into the platform to drive autonomous cybersecurity at scale.

“This is how we stop breaches at the speed of AI while giving customers complete control over their entire data ecosystem – well beyond cybersecurity,” Kurtz said.

The Onum purchase is important, he said, because the company delivers advantages across three critical dimensions: Onum processes data in real time, up to five times faster than competitors; smart filtering can cut storage costs by as much as 50 percent; and detection starts before data even enters the Falcon platform, speeding up response times by 70 percent.

The acquisition also would remove one of the biggest headaches in upgrading to Falcon — moving massive amounts of data. With Onum built in, that process becomes seamless, according to CrowdStrike and Onum.

“Onum was founded on the belief that pipelines should do more than transport data, they should transform data into real-time intelligence,” said Pedro Castillo, founder and CEO of Onum. “By joining CrowdStrike, we can deliver this vision at unprecedented scale to accelerate SOC transformation on a global scale.”

Castillo added that he’s “incredibly proud” of what the Onum team has accomplished in defining real-time telemetry pipeline management, and looks forward to bringing that innovation to the Falcon platform.

No other details about the potential deal were released at press time.
