OPCW announces completion of Syrian chemical weapons destruction

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) announced last week that its subcontractor, Veolia, has completed the disposal of all remaining chemical weapons declared by the Syrian Arab Republic.

Director General of the OPCW Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü commented on the latest update and what it means going forward.

“This process closes an important chapter in the elimination of Syria’s chemical weapon program as we continue efforts to clarify Syria’s declaration and address ongoing use of toxic chemicals as weapons in that country,” Üzümcü said.

The announcement concludes the months-long process of disposing of 75 cylinders of hydrogen fluoride at Veolia’s Texas-based headquarters. The completion was delayed due to compromised and deteriorated cylinders.

The most dangerous elements of the chemical weapons were disposed of in Syria as opposed to bringing the high-level hazardous materials stateside.
