The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) hosted an exhibit focusing on how science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills can contribute to national defense at the USA Science & Engineering Festival at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., last week.
The annual expo includes exhibits from leading scientific and engineering societies, universities, government agencies, high-tech corporations and STEM organizations and aims to inspire children, teens, and families to get involved in STEM.
The DHS exhibit featured components from across the department including the U.S. Coast Guard response boat, an unmanned vessel and other research & development projects, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection mobile command center, the U.S. Secret Service Presidential limousine, the Cyber Security Decryption Challenges and Cyber Innovation Center, the Detection Canines and inspectors from Federal Protective Service, First Responder and Modeling and Simulation technology from the Science and Technology Directorate, a robot maze, a Trace Explosives Sampling Demonstration, and a Stop The Bleed Campaign demonstration of how to stop severe bleeding in an emergency.
