Security screening firm Smiths Detection has introduced an ultraviolet (UVC) light kit it maintains is capable of destroying up to 99.9 percent of microorganisms present at airport security checkpoints.

Smiths Detection UVC kits automatically disinfect baggage trays as they are being transported from the reclaim area back to the divest station via its specially designed casing and other safety measures. The UVC lights pose no exposure risk to staff or passengers and can be installed quickly and easily into existing tray handling systems.

“A trusted advisor within the industry, Smiths Detection has been working with airports globally to deliver necessary enhancements to their infrastructure that can be made in response to the pandemic,” Richard Thompson, Smiths Detection global director – Aviation, said. “UVC lights are a practical, straightforward way that airports can help reduce the transmission of any bacteria or virus that might be on the surface of its trays now and in the long-term.”

The firm said the technology has proven successful throughout the years in disinfecting surfaces in industries with high hygiene requirements, such as food and health sectors, adding its application at checkpoint security reduces the risk of contamination and reassures passengers and staff about security process safety.
