An additional order of 200 million doses of the Moderna, Inc. COVID-19 vaccine, mRNA-1273, this week has brought the total U.S. government’s order commitment to 500 million.

As of June 14, Moderna has supplied 217 million total doses to the government. Another 110 million doses are slated for delivery in the fourth quarter of this year, with another 90 million to follow in the first quarter of 2022. Under the newest deal, the government has also added an option to purchase other COVID-19 vaccine candidates from Moderna’s pipeline later on.

“We appreciate the collaboration with the U.S government for these additional doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, which could be used for primary vaccination, including of children, or possibly as a booster if that becomes necessary to continue to defeat the pandemic,” Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel said. “We remain focused on being proactive as the virus evolves by leveraging the flexibility of our mRNA platform to stay ahead of emerging variants.”

To date, Moderna’s premiere COVID-19 vaccine is operating under an Emergency Use Authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It has gained similar authorizations from more than a dozen other nations, plus members of the European Union, and gained an Emergency Use Listing from the World Health Organization. The company is also being fully reimbursed for allowable costs incurred by its efforts with the vaccine through the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority.
