Qatar Airways, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Qatar Ministry of the Interior will be working together to implement international remote baggage screening at the New Terminal One at John F. Kennedy International Airport for Qatar Airways’ nonstop Doha–JFK route.
The $9.5 billion new Terminal One was designed to support next-generation border processing technologies. International remote baggage screening will transmit X-ray images that were captured prior to departure from Hamad International Airport of JFK-bound passengers’ checked baggage to CBP officers who can remotely review them while the aircraft is enroute. The method expedites processing and allows eligible connecting passengers to proceed directly to their onward flights without reclaiming and rechecking baggage.
“The expansion of International Remote Baggage Screening on the Doha–JFK route significantly bolsters our enforcement capabilities,” Diane Sabatino, CBP executive assistant commissioner office of field operations, said. “This initiative leverages advanced technology and international partnerships to proactively identify and interdict threats before they reach the U.S.”
Installation of the technology aligns with CBP’s Airport Modernization strategy to leverage advanced technology in CBP Federal Inspection Services areas as well as trusted international collaboration to strengthen border security and improve travelers’ experience. The goal is to strengthen U.S. security while supporting global aviation’s growth.
