The U.S. Department of Defense plans to soon expand its AI platform, GenAI.mil, to include xAI for the government’s suite of frontier‑grade capabilities.

The department entered into an agreement with xAI on Dec. 22 for the deployment of its advanced capabilities on GenAI.mil. Under the agreement, xAI’s frontier AI systems will be embedded directly into GenAI.mil. The integration will allow military and civilian personnel to use xAI’s capabilities at Impact Level 5, enabling the secure handling of controlled unclassified information in daily workflows. Users also will gain access to real‑time global insights from the X platform.

Initial deployment will begin in early 2026.

AI is used by the department’s 3 million military and civilian personnel. The department plans to continue scaling its AI ecosystem for speed, security, and decision superiority.

GenAI.mil launched on Dec. 9 and is available as part of Gemini for Government. It is approved to handle controlled unclassified information.

“With this launch, we are taking a giant step toward mass AI adoption across the department,” Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said in an email to personnel. “This tool marks the beginning of a new era, where every member of our workforce can be more efficient and impactful.”
