The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) opened the application period for $1 billion in Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program funding. The application deadline to submit is July 23.

The program provides states, local governments, territories and tribal nations with funding to proactively protect communities from potential disasters including floods, fires, earthquakes and hurricanes.

“When done correctly, mitigation activities save lives and reduce the cost of future disasters,” Karen Evans, senior official performing the duties of the FEMA administrator, said. “For this new funding opportunity, FEMA has reduced bureaucratic hurdles, focused funding on major infrastructure projects and shifted responsibilities to the states, reducing federal overreach.”

Funding will be allocated five ways:

Eligible building code adoption and enforcement activities will be awarded $25 million through Tribal Nation Building Code Plus-Up.

A total of $50 million will be awarded through Tribal Set-Aside with up to a $2 million federal cost share for each applicant.

State or Territory Building Code Plus-Up will be awarded $56 million with up to a $1 million federal cost share per applicant.

States and territories will be awarded $112 million with up to a $2 million federal cost share for each applicant.

The National Competition will award $757 million with up to a $20 million federal cost share per sub-application.
