Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said a study found that Texas gets an economic boost of nearly $148.8 billion from U.S. military installations in his state.
The study analyzed the economic impact of the population and employees directly affiliated with military installations in Texas, including active-duty military personnel, civilian employees, contractors, dependents, and other personnel directly affiliated with each installation. The research found the bases contributed $148.8 billion in economic impact and supported 628,884 direct and indirect jobs across the state.
“The tradition of military service is long in our great state,” Abbott said. “Texas is proud to be home to 15 major U.S. military installations and the Army Transformation and Training Command headquarters. Essential to the defense of our nation, each installation also serves as a major local employer and provides tremendous value to communities across Texas.”
The analysis found U.S. military installations contributed 212,524 direct jobs in 2025-2026, and more than 628,000 total jobs (direct and indirect) for a total economic output of $148.8 billion.
The analysis was part of the Texas Military Preparedness Commission’s (TMPC) biennial report. The TMPC advises the governor and the Texas Legislature on defense and military issues, and on ways to strengthen the position of Texas military installations in preparation for any future Base Realignment and Closure. The commission works with military communities in Texas to support infrastructure, resiliency and mission readiness while ensuring the state remains a key location for military missions, service members and their families.
