Industry leaders meet to discuss Pittsburgh’s role in cybersecurity innovation

More than 200 industry leaders convened in Pittsburgh in early February to discuss the region’s role in cybersecurity information and innovation at the inaugural Cyburgh, PA Initiative Event.

Among those attending the meeting, former Pennsylvania Governor and Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge served as the keynote speaker at the event, held at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). The event was organized by the Software Engineering Institute’s CERT Division, the Pittsburgh Technology Council and CMU. The goal of the initiative is to help organizations use the city of Pittsburgh to create a local, collaborative cybersecurity innovation and education center.

“We need to recognize that to protect our country we need to share the insight we have here,” Dave Hickton, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, said. “There is no better place in the country than Pittsburgh for this. We have the talent, the record, and the tools.”

Security professionals from Alcoa, BNYMellon, FBI Pittsburgh, NCFTA, PNC Bank, Uber’s Advanced Technology Center and other organizations presented educational tracks that focused on the theme of people, process and technology.

The full-day event attracted a sellout crowd of chief information officers and others charged with maintaining the security of computer systems, networks and the data they carry.
