Legislation introduced by U.S. Reps. Greg Landsman (D-OH) and August Pfluger (R-TX) would reimburse local law enforcement agencies $61 million per year for three years for any services, personnel and equipment required to support the Secret Service’s mission.

The Secret Service-Local Law Enforcement Partnership Act would require the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to reimburse state and local law enforcement agencies for their work in helping the Secret Service. Landsman said the legislation stems from an incident in January 2026, when a Southwest Ohio man allegedly used a hammer to vandalize Vice President J.D. Vance’s Cincinnati home. Federal and local law enforcement partnered with the Secret Service to assist in the investigation.

Landsman said he began work on the legislation much earlier after local law enforcement agencies in Southwest Ohio approached him about the financial burden of providing protection for Vance. Currently, neither the Secret Service or DHS are required to reimburse state and local law enforcement agencies for their help.

“Millions of dollars would come back to local law enforcement – our communities – to strengthen the partnership between local and federal agencies to keep everybody safe,” Landsman said.

The legislation is supported by the Fraternal Order of Police.

“Cooperation between the U.S. Secret Service and local law enforcement is a vital part of ensuring the safety and well-being of the President, the Vice President, and others who require protection details,” Patrick Yoes, National President of the Fraternal Order of Police, said. “What is often left unaddressed, however, is the cost that many law enforcement agencies incur while cooperating with the Secret Service, which can place an undue financial burden on agencies throughout the country. This money would be used toward purchasing equipment, hiring personnel, and other necessary items to ensure that law enforcement agencies have the tools needed to assist the Secret Service.”
