The U.S. Coast Guard recently awarded Rhode Island-based Gilbane Federal, a company providing global military construction services, a $114 million contract to modernize the water distribution system at Base Kodiak, Ala.
The contract includes design, labor, material, equipment and site work. Work is scheduled for completion in October 2031.
The base supports surface and aviation operations across Alaska and the Arctic. The Coast Guard has designated it as the future homeport for the service’s first two Arctic Security Cutters.
Gilbane Federal will replace and upgrade more than eight miles of main water distribution lines to ensure safe, dependable potable water and replace four large-scale water storage tanks. The company also will provide suppression systems for two operational aircraft hangars and key shore facilities.
“Every day, the Coast Guard delivers value to our Nation by controlling, securing, and defending our northern border and maritime approaches in the Arctic,” Rear Adm. Jon Hickey, deputy commandant for systems, said. “Our crews need modern, resilient shore capabilities to answer the call and get the mission done. By investing $114 million to modernize Base Kodiak’s critical water and fire-suppression infrastructure, we are directly supporting our forces and their families while building the foundation for our expanding polar fleet and long-term mission readiness.”
